CAN ANIMALS THINK? ENGLISH I

                                                              “CAN ANIMAL THINK?”


OBJECTIVE: By the end of class today SWBAT apply the skills of Literary Analysis
                        To the short story “Can Animals think?” by Eugene Linden



HOMEWORK: Research the term ANIMAL INTELLIGENGE.  Explain thoroughly
                          what has to be said on behalf of Animal Intelligence.



DO NOW:   Silently read pages 27 to 29.  Then prepare for your Meta cognitive Free
                     Write exercise by expanding and discussing in writing this topic:
                     “Deception.” On page 29 it states that “…Countless creatures draw on their
                     abilities not only to secure food and compete with their peers, but also to
                     deal with, deceive and beguile the humans they encounter.  Do you think
                      this is true?  Explain you answer thoroughly and in paragraph form.



DIRECT INSTRUCTION: (1) Identify, analyze and discuss in writing the problem with                              
                                                  Fu Manchu and explain your answer. (2) What was the
                                                  The break through involving R. Allen and Beatrice
                                                   Gardner. (3) Read and then analyze the section on
                                                  “Lending a Helping Trail.”  How does Gail Laule
                                                   encourages an animal to do something? (4) Describe what
                                                   Orky did in order to help out the situation mentioned
                                                   on pages 28 & 29. (5) Examine the vocabulary and create
                                                   one sentence of each of the 5 words (page 26).

GUIDED PRACTICE: On page 29 the writer says “… A sad fact of life is that it is easier
                                       To spot evidence of intelligence in devious behavior than it acts
                                        of cooperation and love.   Think about this and then discuss the
                                        truth and significance of this statement.



INDEPENDENT PRACTICE:  Discuss a situation in which with your neighbor in which
                                                   able to actually witness the intelligence of animals.  Write
                                                   down your neighbor’s thoughts.  Report out by groups
                                                    and discuss it.



CHECKS FOR UNDERSTANDING:  Students will be given the opportunity to ask
                                                               to ask clarifying questions.  Students must raise
                                                               their hands showing that there is an need for
                                                               clarification.



EXIT TICKET : Students must be able to cite their position on animals and intelligence.
